Business Book of the Year

Steve Coll’s Private Empire: ExxonMobil and American Power has won the Financial Times and Goldman Sachs Business Book of the Year Award.

The runners up were:

  • Steve Jobs, Walter Isaacson’s account of the Apple founder’s life and career; 
  • Volcker, a portrait of Paul Volcker, former chairman of the Federal Reserve, by William Silber. 
  • Why Nations Fail, James Robinson and Daron Acemoglu’s inquiry into the roots of economic power and prosperity; 
  • John Coates’ The Hour Between Dog and Wolf, about the biology of financial traders; and 
  • What Money Can’t Buy, Michael Sandel’s exploration of the moral limits of markets.
